Homeschooling: Princess Month

I figured I would try and do some more homeschooling updates on this site so you can see what we're up to and because it will help me when it comes time for the assessment of what we did this year.

Brianna loves princesses. She's ambivalent about school. No big surprise there - who wouldn't want to do what they want when they want all day. So, in an effort to get her more excited about "doing school" and take advantage of the flexibility homeschooling offers, I've declared February to be "Princess Month."

Each week this month, we'll focus on a different princess. This first week of February was Cinderella week. Next week, we'll tackle the Princess and the Pea, followed by The Frog Princess/Princess and the Frog and wrap up with Beauty and the Beast.

I've selected a number different versions of each story so we can compare the imaginations of each author. We're also looking at the characteristics embodied by each princess and search out some Bible verses related to these characteristics or themes in the stories. Where possible, I'll throw in a few activities related to each princess. Since Mom had gotten Brie some princess activity books for her birthday, we'll use this month to finish them up. And of course, what would princess month be without putting together a few princess puzzles and watching princesss movies?!

If I can find it (that is, canned pumpkin), we'll make Cinderella's pumpkin bread. Next week should be a perfect opportunity to make some Princess and the Pea Soup. For the Frog Princess week, we're blessed to have this very theme presented at our zoo so we're praying we're healthy and able to get there. Not sure what we're doing connected to Beauty and the Beast but I am entertaining the idea of having a princess party to wrap up the month. Depends on my energy level as the time draws near. :)

If you have any suggestions for activities to do in connection with our theme princesses, please share them.
