The White Smoothie Returns

Hmmm...this sounds like a cheesy summer blockbuster. Hopefully, this is the last time the white smoothie will make its appearance in this family! Here's the scoop:

Today, on the way in to Reese's tumbling class, he ran ahead of me to the front doors (which open automatically) and put his hands on them until I got there. When I reached him the doors opened and somehow, in whatever way he had placed his hand, his thumb got in between them. Fortunately, it didn't get caught.

At first, I just thought he was crying from it getting banged, but then I saw blood. All I could think of doing from that point was getting to the bathrooms around the corner so I could get a better look and administer any first aid. I manged to get the four of us (since Brie and Luke were with me) to the bathroom, and after washing my hands, inspected Reese's thumb. It looked worse than I originally thought but I still hadn't figured out what I was going to do. Of course, some small part of me hoped this could be quickly cleaned up and Reese could go back to his tumbling class as if nothing had happened.

Fortunately, God was, as always, watching out for us. One of the mothers from Reese's class who happened to be coming through the doors when this happened, came into the bathroom and looked at his thumb. She said she worked in the ER and that he should probably go there as the cut was right at his nail bed. She thought he might need a couple stitches if the nail bed had been lifted up. So then my thoughts became, "Okay, do I call Dave? Try to find someone to watch Brie and Luke while I take care of Reese? Take all of them with me?"

I ended up calling Dave and taking everyone with us to the local Urgent Care Center.

The worst part was driving from the class to Urgent Care because Reese was crying and I knew all he wanted was to be held.

But true to his Reesie self, by the time we had got settled in at Urgent Care he was fully engaged with playing with the books there - with a little help from his big sister! - and didn't seem as bothered by the cut.

To sum it all up, he had quite an exciting morning...he got his first Xray (a percaution), gave his thumb a swim in iodine and got his very own white smoothie.

Here's the picture...

Praying it doesn't get infected and that we don't need to fill the prescription for antibiotics and that his thumb heals quickly and well - he may lose the nail though.
